Thanks for the report - it's been 1.5 years since I was in Montevideo, but clearly the town has the same feeling and effect on you now as it did on me then.
In the main plaza they occasionally have antique fairs, which was a great source for a more authentic souvenir (a 10,000 peso coin from the 1970s - love the hyperinflation). Also, if you're into that kind of thing a museum of money is located not far from the main plaza and was interesting to me...
