Eugene Blues

Riding my mom's bike around a little in the warm summer night, getting a little bluesy. Problems that rattle through my head lately in no particular oder: too much talk about television... who might or might not have a drinking problem... will I ever stop checking out every woman I see? laundry-mats are lonely places at night... missing the innocence and excitement of youth... wondering what exactly I'm going to do with myself...

I think more structure is in order.

But it's a nice night for now, a quiet sunday and the air is nice, and it feels good to roam the streets and pedal slow with no hands. Life here feels smaller and somehow more precious. It makes me think about how much of our experiece depends on where we place our beliefs, what we come to value by choice or by custom. There's a whole world going on just down at the local pizza shop, dramas and feuds and hope and love and probably even some questionable poetry, but we'll never know the whole story.

It's there though, and it comes from people becoming attached to one-another and to their dreams. I want some.

Pork Shoulder; Vegan Brunch; Playing Kick the Keg

It's been a wild week, the "last week of summer" as some have called it. Julia cooked us a series of encredible meals in Weshaven, with ingredients I've never heard of, tastes heretofore unknown, richness and flavor previously unimaginable. The coup de grace was a pork shoulder. It was one of the best dinners I've ever had in my life; no joke. I wish I'd thought of taking some pictures.

So I'm back up in Oregon for a short spell. Last night was Cian and Ashley's wedding ceremony. They actually got married back in December, but hadn't had a party for extended family and friends. Cian's sister set up a great spread in her back yard and we all got too drunk and there were fireworks and a midnight burrito run and a morning of pure teenage hangover death, then Vegan brunch. Good times. Again no pictures. Sorry.

We're now staring down the barrel of Fiscal Year 2007, time to get back in the business of getting shit done. I've got to start making some careerish moves. The summer has been a horizon-broadening experience, and now it's time to get to the next step. Lots of ideas, and still evolving.

Rash of Politix / Real Life Update

There's been a rash of political postings here lately. Apologies to those who find that sort of shit boring.

It's been a good week. Fairly productive, though I think I'm likely to make it a worky weekend to get ahead of next week's houseguests. It's been lovely sunny here and in the '70s. Record heat for the rest of CA was good news for the north coast.

Today it's foggy and cold, as it promises to be for a while. Mark and I are going to pour some concrete to solidify the posts for the new section of fence at the house. It goes around the area where we've previously been clearing brush, new land reclaimed from the brambles. He's headed up to Portland this weekend for a family wedding. I plan to lay low and get a little work/rest done.

Yesterday I took my bike down to town and went to the gym. It still takes about 45 minutes, although I was riding on a dinged rear rim, which I had replaced down at the shop. I'm thinking about getting a cheap-ass bike computer to (statistics) help spur myself to ride faster. I also retain my old rear hub, which has nothing wrong with it, and am considering some kind of home-made exercise-mount or perhaps power-transfer device (e.g. a margarita machine). Could be my starter ticket for bike-theater...

The gym is working out well. Kelly is a day-to-day authority figure at the community pool, and they have a very low-end workout room which I can use for free. It's got everything I need though, and it's usually deserted. I get there about twice a week on average, and have been doing other bike rides, yoga, pushups, crunches, etc here at home. It feels good to be getting overall strength back into my body, feeling the slack getting taken up, the finer control, balance, and surity of motion returning. It's good for my mind, too.

Monday I'll probably make my way down to the Bay. Got some business and an airport redezvous. We've also got guests coming down from Portland, and next week Luke and Julia should be visiting, and then we're headed up to Eugene for a friendly wedding thinger. I'm also headed back to NYC for the last weekend in August for another wedding celebration. Lots on tap.

I'm thinking about mothballing this website for the month. The idea would be to take the time off reading and writing to actually work on rebuilding and relaunching, something I've been wanting to do for more than a year now. Perhaps if I use the time I usually spend reading and posting to work on the new thing it might actually get done. As a bonus I could ignore the march to WWIII for a spell; spare myself some anguish. We'll see.

... yeah 1,300lbs of concrete and it turned into a beautiful day. Quesadillas and Fosters all around.

Exercising

Another productive day here in the State of Jefferson. I've been cranking away at my major client projects during the day, and feeling stimulated creatively and starting to write things down at night. It's a good mix.

The one last thing I absolutely need to do is develop a social life outside the household. This is harder than you might think. I don't really get along with the sort of hippies you get out here. I'm from the old stock, and trendy rope-heads up from Hayward in their SUVs cruising for "heady nugs" rankle my posseur-radar. I'm also a pragmatic man coming outta Brooklyn, so I don't want to hear about crystal healing or the Indigo children either.

But efforts must be made, connections found, etc. There's supposed to be a theater scene here, and there have got to be nerds too. I don't need much, but it's important to me to have some independence, and that means Other People to hang around with from time to time.

Ok. Now, to the gym!

Boris Yeltsin Express

Dipped into my stash of Czech sunshine today to test for purity, potency, etc. Took some advice from Franko and made it a bicycling adventure, good sweaty times along Scenic drive. It's a gorgeous day, and a great one for sitting up on the ridge and watching the surf break over Houda point.

Anyway, it's a free Zen afternoon and I now know the lay of the land.

Attention NYC hipsters: this works. You should do it too.
